Hey CK,
I was looking in the Haul section and saw the FAMICOM DISK SYSTEM copy of Metroid you have. Do you own the sysem also? Or did you just get the game for collectors value?

I have the system too. 98% of the time I am going to have a console to play the game on when I buy a game.

I really like the old 8 and 16 bit Nintendo games. Is it worth it from a play standpoint to get that system, or just use emulation? I am not overly interested in the collectors value.

Hmm. It depends. If there is no collectors value for you, the line is a bit harder to draw.
Emulation, while being able to reproduce the experience of playing an old game via emulating the hardware, is often never *exactly* like playing the original game. Sometimes the sound is a bit off or there is a bit of graphical distortion. These are usually minor things that some people don't even notice. It depends on how deep your nostalgia is buried.
One thing that I have noticed about emulation (for me and many others) is that if you are playing the game illegally, you don't have as much of a desire to play it through. You will game a few minutes and lose interest. It doesn't really have as much meaning. Playing the real game - putting it in, turning on the console, etc...helps add to the nostalgia as well as give you a more "realistic" feeling of playing the game.
A lot of this depends on how many games you want to play and which games you want to play.
When you said "worth it from a play standpoint," what exactly did you mean?

Is that version of Metroid the exact same as what I have for my old 8 bit NES?

Yes...except no.
That is the original Metroid like the one you played...only it has save games instead of passwords. The sound effects also sound a bit different.
