I have been buying a lot on ebay lately (starting a new collection, but I digress for a later thread). In fact over the last few weeks I probably bought 10 or 12 things from different sellers. Each seller I have paid by Paypal within hours after my win.
My rant is out of all these sellers I have paid only 1 has left me feedback. The feedback really isn't the issue with me. It is the fact that all their emails have said something like," as soon as you receive the item and leave me feedback I will do the same"
They try to word it as nice as possible like they are doing you a favor. Really though, when it comes down to it they are holding it over your head. They know if you are not satisfied you will think twice before leaving them a negative or neutral for fear of reprisal.
The last auction I won the guy sent the same old email," as soon as you receive the item and leave me feedback I will do the same". Old Papa Bear decided to make a stand. I typed him back sternly," I did my part by paying quickly now you do yours." An hour later he left me a positive.
Anyone else notice this trend.

Ahh. I don't really care all that much, myself. I am at 165+ right now. I suppose it would matter if you are looking to really stack your feedback, but I think it is overrated once you get to like...20. If you think about it, 20 is a fairly large amount of transactions through the site. I don't really feel any different when bidding on a 30 @ 100% seller's items than I do a 50 or 75 @ 100% seller. Sometimes I worry even more about the 10,000+ sellers due to the fact they obviously deal in volume & if something goes wrong - they don't care.
Still - if you are expecting people to leave you positive feedback because they said they would, I can see how that would be frustrating. I generally give feedback and don't pay attention to if the other ebayer involved leaves me feedback. (Unless of course it is neutral or negative)
How much time have you given them to leave feedback? I sometimes will go a week before leaving feedback. Some sellers might go a month. Many will sit down and just do "feedback maintenance" once a month since you can leave feedback on any item within 90 days after the auction's end.

Again, feedback isn't really the issue that torks me. I have 400+ and am 100% so I could deal with a negative. It is the fact that sellers seem to be using feedback as leverage to do a mediorcer job. If a seller tells you they won't leave feedback until you do for them they are trying to hold said feedback over your head.
Right now I have been waiting for an item for going on 3 weeks. I paid immediatly after the auction ended. He even printed a paypal shipping label the next day. Paypal in turn sends the buyer an email where you can track your package. USPS tracking says they have been notified the package is coming, but have not recieved it. That means the seller still has it. So say I get the package tomarrow and the postmark is todays date. That means the seller waited weeks before mailing it. Does he deserve a positive feedback? If I leave him negative or neutral feedback. He has the opportunity to leave me the same even though I paid right after the auction ended.
The point being is that feeback is really a crock when it comes down to it.

I see your point bear, and although I don't use ebay as much as you guys (I'm around a 15-20), I do feel like I sometimes have no choice but to leave positive bc if I don't they'll leave me a negative (which would probably hurt me a bit, having such a low overall "score" as it is..).

I agree with you all the way bear. It should not matter what I leave the seller, I base that on how they did. Since i pay for all my items within 24 hrs, feedback should be based on that, not what I say.

Being that I just had an ebay store for the last few months here's my take:
If I the seller, leave the buyer Feedback right away. The buyer can be a jerk, if he felt like it, and leave me neagtive feedback ...just becuase. So it works both ways Bear. On the other hand, If the seller leaves it for me (the buyer) then I hold all the cards. Then I would not hesitate to leave feedback, negative or positive. Which I used against a seller once, who missrepresented an item. He left me feedback allready and then I e-mailed him to make it right, which he did.
So basically... I don't leave feedback until I get it first, if I'm selling or buying. There are too many ignorant people out there.
(CK... I smell a raido topic)

Yeah I have 616 feedback on Ebay as both a buyer and a seller....I have to say that I do wait until people receive their item, before I leave feedback. I ask them to email once they receive the package or let me know if they have an issue with the package. That way before my hands are tied I do have some leverage.
Here's the reason...early on when I was selling some stuff, a guy gave me negative feedback 4 days after an auction ended. He bought and paid for the item. I sent it out the next day and sent him an email to the address he had given. It arrived there 2 days later, as put a tracking number on all the packages. The jerk left me negative feedback and said I was uncommunicative. The transaction went off in a quicker than normal fashion and I was flabbergasted that he left me feedback. He would not respond to email and I had already left positive feedback for him....2 months later he has several negative feedbacks and is kicked off Ebay, but I am still stuck with his sorry comments.
Now whenever I sell anything, they don't get feedback until they receive the package and confirm it with me or leave me positive feedback. This is the only way to know they are happy with what was sent. I am not necessarily trying to use it over them, but it does give you leverage if there is some issue. If they don't insure the package and Postal loses it, that is not my issue, but they see it that way. I have also found that if you leave them feedback, you may get 6 out 10 that actually will post any feedback in return. If they are looking for feedback to be left as a buyer, they will normally post it and then I post. As the seller, it is the only way you have to ake sure that all problems are solved before negative feedback is left for no reason. There are a lot of hot heads who get pissed about nothing...and want to take it out on someone. I've also been scammed by someone who said they never got the package and didn't dispute it until 90 days after, so I couldn't leave feedback to warn people. I now add trcking to everything, since the Post office now offers it for free with Priority shipping. You really have to cover your butt as a seller or a buyer.....
When I am the buyer, once I receive the package, I will post feedback for somebody with in a day. I have very few issues when buying stuff on Ebay, it is usually selling when the flakes hit.

My personal rule for feedback on Ebay is as follows: If I'm the buyer I will leave feedback the same day I recieve the item. So I want to leave feedback first. If I'm the seller I will not leave feed back until buyer leaves feedback. So if I don't get it, I wont leave it. So basicly I feel the seller should get the feedback first. I feel your pain Papa Bear. I know my feedback on Ebay would be bigger than it is. Because I've done more transactions on Ebay than the feedback I have.
