Most of my computers are old, and is some cases barely meet the requirements to run server operating systems, and in some cases XP. I had few choices I could use in getting newer computers.
1. Buy used ones off craigs list.
2. Buy used parts to build a PC.
3. Buy a refurbished/off lease PC from Tiger Direct.
4. Build an all new PC.
With option 1, you might get a good deal, but you dont really know what you are getting. Option 2 can cost almost as much and sometimes more than new parts, so that is not a good option.
Options 3 and 4 are the best bet. With option 3 you can get a good PC with a warranty and XP for 100 - 200 dollars. But you are very limited in upgrades. With option 3, the cost is higher and no operating system, between 250 - 300 dollars, but the parts are brand new AND you have much better upgrade potential.
For running XP/2003/Vista, I think option 3 is best. For Windows 7/2008, option 4 is best.
Here are the specs of the 2 options I settled on:
Option 3 system - Off lease from Tiger Direct
Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz HT (Pentium D Max) 1 GB RAM (4 GB Max) 80 GB Hard Drive DVD Drive 10/100/1000 Network Card $135.00
Option 4 system - All new parts
Athlon II x2 2.8 Ghz 2 GB RAM 160 GB Hard Drive DVD Drive 10/100/1000 Network Card Basic Case, motherboard and power supply $250.00
Note: The savings between option 3 and 4 is that I can get 2 off lease computers for the price of one new one. (This is after shipping and taxes are considered.)
