Once upon a time, both my brother and I were really big into collecting baseball cards. Every dollar we got went into buying cards. Of course, this was the late mid to late 80's and very early 90's and cards were about 50 cents for a pack of about 20 -25 cards. Now you can pay $5.00 a pack and only get 4 0r 5 cards. I have started collecting them again, but its a very limited basis.
Does anyone here collect baseball cards? If not, did you used to collect them?

Those were the days. Remember when you got the terrible hard as a rock gum with your cards? I used to send cards in self addressed stamped envelopes to stadiums and players would autograph them and send them back. I mostly did that with football cards. I had auographs from Joe Montana, Walter Payton, Mike Singletary, and the Fridge. Dan Marino even sent me back an 8x10 auto graphed with my card and a letter. I wonder whatever happened to that? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png)

I wonder whatever happened to that? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) Magic and Pokemon. Seriously though - In the early nineties, card dealers were making a lot of money off sports cards - particularly baseball cards. Score entered in 1988 and Upper Deck in 1989. Manufacturers like Topps, Fleer, and Donruss started making additional sets in addition to their main line of cards. Topps Stadium Club and Fleer Ultra became the new "high line" of baseball cards, and Donruss put extra flare in their Leaf line of cards. Leaf used to look just like the Donruss cards. In 1990, Leaf became "expensive donruss." In addition to all of this, manufacturers started to mass produce factory sets. People could just buy the whole set of cards rather than buy the packs and trade with friends. The entire hobby became both expensive and easy (if that makes sense). If you had the means, you could easily just buy that line of cards in one swoop. If you didn't have the money, you were left in the dark to do something else. Packs used to be 50 cents. I remember Stadium Club hitting in like..1991 for $2.50 a pack! Absolutely insane! I collected at the time here and there because of my dad. As toys and video games are my items, my dad was a collector (and dealer) of sports items and especially baseball cards starting in the 1970s. I guess I get my collecting gene from him.
