I spy with my little eye.
“Welcome, Laserbeak. Unlike some of my other warriors, you never fail me,” Megatron – Transformers: The Movie

My, my. What trouble has this single cassette of Soundwave’s caused over the millions of years the Autobots and Decepticons have been at war? He was there in More Than Meets the Eye - millions of years before the Transformers would reach earth. He was there in the movie, and gave a report which would lead to the deaths of many beloved Autobots. I think he retired in 2005 when the young Ratbat cassette hit the scene.

Time after time after time again, Laserbeak was capable of doing what many other Decepticons have never done – succeed. Did any of you ever grow annoyed by how often he would gather information to ruin an Autobot’s day? I suppose I must be an Autobot fanboy or something, because it always ticked me off. That didn’t mean I wouldn’t have liked to have had a Laserbeak toy. I never did though.
What was it that got to me so much? Was it the camera in his head? Was it the screeching bird noise he always made? Was it the fact that he practically had his own perch at Autobot Headquarters? Laserbeak got to the Autobots, and he got to me. I think that his presence in the cartoon is usually overlooked by most of the fans. Nobody ever starts a topic like, “who here is a big Laserbeak fan?” Yet there he was! All the time! And he got the job done to boot.

Toy Facts:
Laserbeak has a very nice, streamlined transformation from his original cassette form. The feet fold down, the wings spread out, and that menacing beak of his emerges from the cassette block. …I am glad I have one. Haha. All of the cassettes manage to have a mode which looks nothing like a cassette. This is obviously a good thing. Laserbeak transforms from cassette into condor. He actually has a “look” in his eye which must have instantly clued the writers in on what sort of character he should be. His back is made of metal and painted red. He has a sticker on the opposite side which creates his cassette tape look. The golden eyes really add flair to him.
Disappointments:
Well, other than the fact he is an indirect, Autobot-killing machine, I don’t have many disappointments with Laserbeak. As a matter of fact, I don’t know if there is anything that I would change about his toy.

Collecting Laserbeak:
First things first – if your Laserbeak doesn’t have a good, traditional, red paint job, he needs to be replaced. Check the metal on him and make sure that the paint is there, and that there are no chips. Another thing that is typically overlooked is the Decepticon symbol on his beak. I think this is a very important sticker which should be right there on the evil bird’s beak. Sometimes, it is easy for Laserbeak to have “wing dings.” Make sure that there haven’t been any malicious things done to the wing parts of the cassette. Check the stickers on top of the wings for fading & check the stickers on the opposite side for signs of curling.
Laserbeak comes with two weapons, and both are chromed. Make sure there isn’t any major chrome wear on either one. Also note that there are various mold differences between Laserbeaks and Buzzsaws. It is quite possible that whatever weapons you pick up for either one might have pegs which won’t fit the holes. If you are trying to buy weapons for either, you may want to have your cassettes with you to try out the peg/hole combinations.
There is no G2 version of Laserbeak.
There is somewhat of a copyright on Laserbeak. On mine in particular, one of his “hips” has Takara written on it and the other has Japan. Check him out in condor mode. The rubsign is located on the cassette sticker side of him.
Laserbeak is a must own and should be on display in extreme close proximity to Soundwave.
