Evil. Pure Evil.
Violence will only grow so strong in a kids TV show. Writers have to deal with the censors. They attempt to create a conflict between good and evil while keeping it appropriate for the viewing age. Megatron was tame in the TV show, but he was a force to reckon with once he obtained screen time in Transformers: The Movie. You could argue that during the brief time he was himself (that is...Megatron) in the movie, he did quite a bit of damage on the morality scale.

The robot mode of the Megatron toy is....well it's uhh....Did I mention I keep my Megatron toy in gun mode? Truth be told, I actually think that the robot mode for Megatron's toy is underrated. Yes, yes he doesn't look quite like his cartoon counterpart. However I have to say that when you stand the Megatron toy next to the Optimus Prime toy, it brings a smile to your face. They match up well.
I never had a Megatron toy as a kid. I don't really recall asking for it. I think I was mostly after the Autobots when I first started. I didn't have a leader for the Decepticons until I got Galvatron back in 1986. Therefore, no memories of Megatron. No friends had him either. In fact - I didn't see Megatron outside of catalogues and other pictures until I saw him in a collectors shop in 1997!

Toy Facts:
Megatron is the first (and one of the few toys) whose alternate mode is based on role play. While other toy lines had their swords, shields, and masks, Megatron actually became a role playing toy in alternate mode. His robot mode leaves a little to be desired in terms of the representation of his cartoon counterpart. The trigger belly and the thin legs don't exactly have him looking menacing. However the intense use of chrome and that silver & black color scheme still manages to keep him evil. The attachments for that "oh so tiny" handgun were the same attachments (in terms of looks) that were used on the 1960s TV show "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." (United Network Command for Law and Enforcement):

Megatron had metal feet and metal hinges. His chrome is present all over the place. He had three attachments - a silencer, scope, and stock. Each one of these attachments broke down into three seperate pieces. So if you find a loose Megatron in his standard, small Walther P-38 mode - that's great. You have a full Megatron leader. However note that if you want his alt mode, you still lack nine pieces. Throw in a funky-looking chrome gun for the robot mode to hold and you have all of him. Of course, there are also Japanese differences (a sword). Speaking of Japanese, the Japanese version of Megatron actually fired little toy bullets! Some remaining pieces of the firing chamber can be found in the early American releases.
Disappointments:
If Prime was rock solid, Megatron was a toddler learning how to walk. His legs and their transformation sometimes make it difficult to stand him up. He looks almost nothing like his cartoon counterpart. The Arms are stubby. The fusion cannon mounted on his right arm is way too big. He has a trigger for a stomach. He doesn't hold up very well from play. He has many breakable parts and is hard to find in perfect shape.
There are so many things to complain about - but he is Megatron. Perhaps that fact that he is Megatron is enough to make us really like him - but really I think it is his alternate mode. I mean - according to law, you could very well be mistake for a criminal if you walked into Walmart carrying this guy. Think about that. The fact that you would have a fuzzy image on a black and white security camera wouldn't help you either. You would probably scare a few people - but then would that be because you are holding a real gun or the leader of the Decepticons? Yikes!
Either one seems like it would bring pain.

Collecting Megatron:
If you want to buy an original Megatron, you are in for one wild ride if you try to piece him together. It seems like there could be a degree created for the sole purpose of knowing how to collect Megatron. If you go the ebay route, there is really no way that the seller can truely TELL you what state the toy is in. If you look at Megatron minus his U.N.C.L.E. attachments, you already have quite a few things to check. (Working from bottom up in robot mode...)
Gun:
1: Do his metal feet pull out and hold their place properly?
2: Do the knees seperate, hold their position and stand him evenly?
3: Are the hinges at the hips and waist (on the leg parts) still functional? (I still functionnnnnnn!)
4: Is the barrel joint still properly connected to the gun shaft?
5: Does the trigger have proper spring-action?
6: Does the barrel joint pivot properly?
7: Has the barrel pieces been glued back on?
8: Does the gun shaft (robot chest) swing properly across the trigger block? (holding place for the chest)
9: Does the head/arm assembly still have tight joints and hold position in robot mode?
10: Do the arms open properly?
11: Do the hands extend properly?
12: Are the tabs broken on the hands?
13: Does the face connect to the head properly?
General:
1: Does anything feel too loose?
2: How do the stickers look?
3: Is there any rust?
4: Has anything else possibly been glued?
Attachments:
1: Does the barrel have its stickers?
2: Does the scope have its stickers?
3: Does the stock have its stickers?
4: Is the back of the stock in good shape? (check for glue)
5: Do all parts of the gun appear to be in-line when looking down on the gun from above with all attachments (especially the silencer) attached? No point having a gun that looks like it will "slice or hook" a bullet.
The G2 Megatron was a big green tank. Pretty easy to tell from the G1 gun, I must say.
The copyright for Megatron is located on the trigger block on the right side of the gun. The rub sign is located on the right side of the black gun handle - near the top. Personally, I prefer the gun without the rub sign.
Accessories - Sometimes it is hard to find the butt of the stock in good shape. As if the Transformer itself didn't have enough things to check, you have to look for accessory problems as well.
The entire hand gun that the Megatron robot holds is really big and made of ...yes...chrome. Potential wearing of chrome is yet another thing to check. The scope will be one of the harder pieces (all three pieces) to find as that is the most important ingredient to making your Megatron look like he was from the cartoon. He doesn't have a few small tips to really point out, he has a ton! Re-read the ones listed above & have fun obtaining Megatron!
