Just curious. Thought I would dust off the Fantasy forum a bit.

Haven't picked them up in a while, but I've got the "core" books - Weiss and Hickman's stuff: Chronicles trilogy, Legends trilogy, Dragons of Summer Flame, Second Generation, and a few others. I'm waiting on the newest trilogy to be completed before I read it (which covers the time jump in the middle of Chronicles).
As far as I've been told, the only other "must read" book I haven't picked up yet is the story of Huma.

I haven't read any of them, would like to jump in, and have no idea where to start.

I have never read a Dragonlance book, but I do highly recommend the Forgotten Realms books. Especially anything written by RA Salvatore. He has been writing Forgotten Realms books for 20 years. I read The Hunter's Blade Trilogy and it was by far one of the best fantasy series I have ever read. Right now I am reading the Orc King which is the first part of the next trilogy. The Pirate King comes out in October and the Ghost King will be out in Oct. of 2009.

The core list of Dragonlance, in the order to read:
Dragonlance Chronicles - The trilogy that began it all in 1984! Dragons of Autumn Twilight Dragons of Winter Night Dragons of Spring Dawning
Dragonlance Legends Time of the Twins War of the Twins Test of the Twins
The Raistlin Chronicles The Soul Forge Brothers in Arms
The Second Generation
Dragons of Summer Flame
If you want to borrow instead of buy, Chris, PM or call me and I can meet you with the Chronicles trilogy.
I've been looking into starting Forgotten Realms. Drizzt is one of the few major characters of fandom I know practically nothing about. I like that they've been re-releasing his stories numbered in the order to read them (in addition to book 1 of trilogy X, etc), but I just haven't quite bit off on that yet.

This may come off as sounding ignorant on my part, but I assumed that Dragonlance was pretty much all dragons and dragon slaying. That is why I went with the Forgotten Realms books. They really have the right mixture of adventure, character, and creatures.

In the Dragonlance universe, the Dragons are the servants of the Gods (Good, Neutral, and Evil). In the Chronicles trilogy period, the Good and Neutral Dragons have been gone for thousands of years, and even the Evil Dragons are nearly relegated to legend.
The main characters are the typical D&D group of semi-random adventurers who are thrown together to try to save the world: - A sickly but powerful mage and his twin brother (a very healthy fighter) - A half-elf - A grumpy old dwarf - A kender (somewhat like a halfling, with a racial attribute of severe kleptomania) - A human knight - A nomadic tribal princess and her warrior escort
I may be leaving a few out, like I said above its been awhile. The group meets, splits, and reunites several times throughout the story as war, personal desires, and intrigues take each individual's attentions and talents. For 1984, it was a major leap in fantasy writing (though it seems somewhat cheesy by current standards).
The series is named after a legendary weapon crafted by the side of Good in the last great war, the Dragonlance. This was the only weapon that a human could wield (think of jousting knights, and you'll get the idea) that would hurt and kill a Dragon, and was used by the last of the Good Dragonriders to win the war (after which the Good Dragons left for realms unknown).
There are Dragons and Dragonriders throughout the story, but they are not the focus of the story.
Since you are a fan of Forgotten Realms, Bear, I would highly recommend giving Dragonlance a try. I've known many people who are fans of both.

I have been reading the Stowaway by RA Salvatore and his son Geno. It is more Tween oriented, but I am a sucker for Drizzt and Co. Thr ow in those characters with a bunch of swashbuckling pirates and you have yourself a fun read.
