While at OTFCC this wekend with s.m.40 and CkrTech I made a Reference to LOTR and s.m.40 said he wsn't up on the films. Not a big deal. People like different things. The thing is though it seems I know tons of Star Wars fans who will not give LOTR the time of day. Even to the point of downright not wanting to see it ever.
The only conclusion I can draw is that Star Wars fans are afraid it will make their passion seem week in comparison.
Just an observation by your old Uncle Bear.

Most of it is probably the sci-fi vs. fantasy aspect. A lot of fans are exclusive to one or the other.

I agree with Jo'. I loved LOTR, and I'm not that big of a SW fan. The Star Wars movies are okay to watch once in a while, and I definately prefer the origionals to the "special editions", but decidedly not my first choice for a pleasant evenings entertainment.
LOTR on the other hand, I'm already half planning an all day viewing party for when the extended version is released of the last one in November. We will do an all day LOTR marathon watching all three extended versions back to back. (planned breaks for food and necessities....) The only drawback to the LOTR movies, is that you have to plan to watch it. They are too long to just "pop in" if it is too late, or you have something else going on.
That is why most women like "chick flicks". We are wired to be able to multi-task, and when we have things to do, we can pop in a chick flick and still get our work done and pass the time quicker. I especially like to do this when doing laundry. I HATE laundry, but it doesn't do itself, so I try to make it go faster by not really thinking about it while I'm doing it.

Well, I'm pretty much equally obsessed with both Star Wars and LotR. I think they're both wonderful epics (in my opinion the two greatest fictional sagas of the past 100 years). I don't see how being a fan of one makes a person less a fan of the other one. It's too bad there's that hesitancy or even hostility between the fan bases. I've noticed the same thing between Star Wars and Star Trek fans, which I don't understand either. I use Trek ship registry numbers as online passwords, talk to my pets in Elvish, and have a homemade lightsaber next to my bed. ;D Just one big insane family... ![](http://img8.photobucket.com/albums/v28/gunman_sr5/8_8_10.gif)

Anyone who's that exclusive to one set of films than the other is acting foolish, and that sort of behaviour just ends up creating ignorance. Is someone going to love Star Wars so much that he won't watch the Godfather movies? Or read a book for that matter?
I don't buy the whole fantasy/sci-fi argument, either, because Star Wars, despite having sci-fi elements, is a fantasy movie. It doesn't really deal with science at all, any more than LotR does (just different levels of technology).
Besides, Lucas himself has stated that Tolkien was one of his major influences. If you want to learn more about Star Wars, read LotR, and watch the Seven Samurai, while you're at it (although I think The Hidden Fortress was even more influencial).

No I have not ever seen LOTR or know anything about it, and will probably never see it. But for those who have and like it that's cool. But for me Star Wars is the best thing ever(excluding the wife ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) )! I've been hooked on SW since I was a kid and now I've gotten old, grumpy, and set in my ways. So go collect your rings because the Force is with me. ;D Now if that did not sound like an official Star Wars geek I don't know what does. ;D

Sure, I'll go get my rings .... let's see .....
Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky, Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone, Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die, One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie. One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

I'm a pretty big Star Wars fan (mostly the classic trilogy), but I'm not interested in LOTR whatsoever. It has nothing to do with being biased towards Star Wars or being afraid it'll lessen my love for the films, it's just that the premise of LOTR doesn't interest me in the least. I'm just not into sword and sorcery type movies. I've never seen more than a few minutes of LOTR on cable, same with Harry Potter. Sometimes I could swear Rose and I are the only people into escapist stuff that _haven't_ seen these movies. Tony PS- And that Gollum guy frightens me. He needs to put on more clothes!
