Right now I am going to start with either Mandrake 10 or Fedora Core 2 running KDE 3.2.

Well about the only real thing you can do with linux is set it up. I think that you hit the nail on the head. After setting it up and tinkering around with it for about an hour or so, there is not much else to do. There are some people that swear by Linux, and for a computer running Apache web server or wouking as a firewall/router, maybe. But it is not much good for a home computer. Sure you can add a picture to the desktop and serf the web, but that is about it. I can run openoffice.org, but I like MS Office better. It has a couple of games, but can not even hope to touch what you can get on Windows. So, other than being used as a Unix alternative when you need a command line OS, of if you are just too cheap to buy Windows, I see no real use for it.
