OK here is what I need help with. I want to find a budget laptop under $600 that is perfect for crusing the net. Now that I have a 2 story apartment and wireless conections. I don't want to have to stay upstairs all the time to be online. I checked out Newegg.com and found a brand called acer. No clue on them. So far Dell is the most apealing. Any advice would be great.

Acer has been around a long time. Don't know much about their laptops though. Their desktops have been around forever, though.
Dell is always a possibility - they can usually give you good support. I would recommend a Sony, however those are usually pricey. There are probably a few coupon codes out there for Dells. Might see what you can turn up with google
If all you are going to do is cruise the net, you would probably be fine buying an older/used one. You could probably get one pretty cheap. The only problem with this is that you would potentially have a battery at the end of its life. (You could always check with the seller if you get it off ebay....)
You don't really need much for surfing the web, really. I use a Pentium III 650 Mhz laptop & it is just fine. Most everything today is going to have bells and whistles - no need, really. You might be able to get a used laptop off ebay for a heck of a lot cheaper than $600 & then just buy a new battery for it. Boom. Easy. Maybe even half that cost....give it a search.

Personally, I had a bad experience with an Acer desktop 10 years ago, so I am not inclined to that brand.
For Dell, better to stay away. Their laptops are never quite as good as the desktops. My dad has been through several, and has had various success with them.
I have heard a lot of good things about Compaq's laptops, and almost got one myself until I saw this Toshiba with better specs for the same price (on sale). I know Compaq has a stock model or two that are around $600, before tax.
Also, look through the refurbished sales online. They're generally just as good, just failed something on the first inspection and so had to be re-opened and repaired so that they can no longer be sold as new. You can get a decent discount with refurbished stock.

Are Compaq laptops still around?
I'll say for the record that I have delt with about 4 of them & all were just fine.

Yep, Compaq still exists. I believe HP is using the Compaq brand as the budget line of products. Best Buy and Fry's Electronics sell Compaqs, plus there's also www.compaq.com.
