This may sound kinda stupid, but for some reason I get the urge just to buy crap for the sake of buying crap. Crap= toys. I know I’m not alone, so come on, are we all just mental? Right now I find myself searching the Internet with the intent to buy SOMETHING. ANYTHING! I have all the Transformers I really need, heck I’m trying to sell some of them. I got more Statues than the St. Louis Museum of Arts. Why can’t I stop, and just be satisfied with what I have? I don’t want to just waste money, but for some reason it’s almost obsessive compulsive.

There have actually been studies on this and other forms of impulse buying. They found that there is a natural endorphine boost, giving the shopper a "high", when something new is bought (especially after a long search without results) followed by a "let-down" after the new-ness of the experience wears off.

So I am getting high off the toys. What do I do for rehab. I need to find a way to stop.

I have come to the realization that I don't have time to do certain things with my collection that I would like to. Simply put, I don't have time to play. When I was a kid i always dreamed of the day that I could have a large Cobra or Stormtrooper army like in the shows or movies. Now these armies that I have built are plotting against me under my bed. Thank God they are sealed in air tight tubs. Coming to this realization this past week has made me really rethink my collecting as a whole. I want quality over quantity. I figured this out (Thanks to Jack) when it came to Transformers about a year ago. Since then I have really enjoyed my Transformers collection. Others like TMNT and Star Wars have just stressed me out trying to find everything. In the meantime all the money I spent on being a completist could have gone to more quality items for my Transformers and Disney collection. Take for example the Rocketeer Helmet that would be sweet for my Disney Collection. The thing is $300.00. Thats a lot of shmeckle. However, if I would not have bought 15 Stormtroopers, army built Vipers, and got a clan of Foot Soldiers I could have bought it and had money left over. I guess it is better late then never to learn this lesson, but I sure would have liked to learn it 2 years ago

I went this route as well within the past half year. I still buy things from many different lines, but as I was putting together the G1 collection...I realized what "buying to have it all" really meant & found it almost worthless. If you have to buy just to have everything & that is your only reason, then you are just wasting money.
Even the lines that I am collecting "everything" from really isn't everything. Everything G1 means 1984-1987 to me. Everything new He-Man means all regular characters. No special/deluxe characters. (No spinblade skeletor, etc...)
There is a lot of Star Wars stuff that I bought about a year and a half to two years ago. I look at some of it now and ask, "why?" I face the fact that I want that Sideshow Leia statue & that causes me to say: If I hadn't bought all these newer 3 3/4 figures and unleashed, I could easily have bought this statue. (Gee Bear - this is pretty eerie isn't it?)
So my new years resolution was to examine my stuff (mostly star wars) and sell a lot of it in order to up the overall collection fund. I am not quite certain if now is a good time (immediately after Christmas) to sell on ebay, but the moment is coming up soon....If anything, I hope to make the dump before shelling out the $$$ for Leia.

I've been doing the quality over quantity for quite a while now as well. But now I'm still buying alot of stuff, just costs alot more...It's like the Bible says "The Flesh is never satisfied."
I'm considering getting into 1:18 scale cars from movies and TV Shows. (Almost bought the car from Ghostbusters tonight). But decided to wait until I get some paypal funds that are coming and get it on-line.

Wow this opens up a huge can of worms....I think DF nailed it on the head. So this is me....I check the board on Friday night...."Oh my gosh"....someone found a new basic Transformer....eeek...I have to get it now...I haven't bought a toy in over 2 weeks...what is the world coming to?.....I drive all over a good part of the morning....to roughly 15 or so Wal-Mart/Target/TRU/KB toys in the area.....................
.......... ......... ....... ..... ... .. .
AND FIND NOTHING>>>
Yet...while I am in the stores, because I haven't found anything, I find myself having a wandering eye and it landing on other toylines....so now the dilema is debating with myself about buying something from another toyline....AND JUSTIFYING IT! All the time knowing that if I were to purchase something, anything...the world would be set right and the frenzied feeling would dissipate....even though I would probably regret buying whatever it was I wanted. This all to just satisfy the urge.
I think Ck and I had discussed this at one point a while back....when I dropped GI Joe and picked up TMNT....I was an army building completist GI Joe freak and converted that focus to TMNT for the main and secondary characters..not really the turtle variants. So although I scaled back on spending and don't feel the necessity to buy one of every turtle variant....you still have the urge to buy. You can have everything you want, but all said and done....if you go out hunting and come back with nothing...the world is just not right until a purchase is made.....
YES IT IS A DISORDER! Anything that is this much fun has to be a disorder! ;D

I do the same thing ck; I haven't found anything this year and I've noticed my eyes straying to other toys. I think the biggest thing that has helped me stay true to myself is that I remind myself of the lady in my life.. ..who would be chun li, of course, and she ain't cheap!

Didnt read the entire thread because something catched my eye; this words are so truth. I had a big tf collection once, but I always felt I needed something else. And I was a bad completist, because everytime I was about completing a series, another thing was missing from my eye, what a pain. Now, collecting selected items make me happier, I think I dont have to have everything to feel good about toy collecting. Btw, today I ran across a Mudflap and I had that impulse youre talking about, but I left him there; beside, I had no money to spend on it anyways

WOW I never thought that my Transformers collecting philosophy would have effected other collectors like it has. I'm glad if it has help you out RodimusConvoy, and Bear as well, to help you enjoy your collection more, and to be more meaningful to you. Instead of buying just to be buying. On the other hand I'm sort of completely crazy when it comes to Star Wars though. For Star Wars I call myelf the most incomplete completest. ;D But with TFs I feel like I got a handle on it. I want my TF collection to be full of substance and not filler.

Inspireing words. Soon I will be weeding out the stuff I don't want from my collection as well. Gona focus on the cool stuff I want. May still buy most things, but I may not keep all of it. Make sense?
