Hey all (all = Destro & Jay so far)
So I thought I would start up a new thread to talk about a combination of old games as well as the virtual console for the Wii.
I haven't downloaded any VC games for the Wii, and there are currently no games that I plan on downloading - but the common point here is that I collect old games & you guys are downloading old games.
So in a way, the two paths cross.
Picking up where we left off in the hauls thread (regarding Zelda II, Starfox 64 and DKC2):
Jay - I have played Starfox 64. I would say that the best one is probably the original Starfox for SNES (even with its slowed framerate). The game for N64 was good for multiplayer.
Both are probably a bit dated now, however I would have to say that the gameplay for the original still holds up quite well. I imagine the same story is true for the N64 version....although I have logged more time with the SNES version than the N64 with most of my N64 experience coming at the time of the game's original release.
I played the SNES version a few times within the past few years, so the most recent experience - again - comes with the SNES version. I would say give it a try.
I never really latched on to the Donkey Kong Country games. Probably because they were nothing like the game "Donkey Kong" or "Donkey Kong Jr." from the earlier days of gaming. So I personally can't recommend them, but maybe you will like them.

Yeah DK COuntry 2 is my favorite...I used to finish that game on a regular basis. IT was a great game, as far as I am concerned. I think I am going ot go ahead and DL Starfox64...I mean it is only $10.00 to DL it and since we bought the classic controller for it, I think it will be fun. I am now thinking about doing Zelda II, if they offer it. I remember there werre all sorts of tricks and codes to that game and it was so much fun to play!

So far I've dl'ed Zelda 2, Punch Out, Kid Icarus, Super Star Soldier, R-Type, and Gunstar Heroes, and the only one I regret is R-Type. I might put up some short reviews later.

Has anyone played Actraiser for the snes? It came out recently and looks like it could be really good.
What about streets of rage 3 (for genesis)? I thought the 2nd was one of the best, probably the best, side-scrolling fighter I've ever played.

Dont leave me out. Love the old school Nintendo games. The Metroid and Mario games are my favorite. But I also like Killer Instinct, Mario Kart Donkey Kong. I guess I have been playing Nintendo games since they put out Donkey Kong for the Atari 2600.

I was seriously considering getting a Wii for awhile, mostly for the retro games feature. But most of the games available that I'd actually consider buying I already have for the original systems (albeit those systems are stored up in the attic someplace). Plus you can download emulators on-line that also play the same games for free. So I guess there just isn't enough incentive for me to take the plunge just yet. Maybe I'll rethink my stance once the new Smash Bros hits.
8-Bit will always be my favorite video-game era, 90% due to the Nintendo NES. So many awesome classics, so many memories, so many sore thumbs, so many missed homework assignments, so many cartridges I had to blow into to get working... It's gotta be the greatest game system ever created!

With you on that one, Tony.
I collect the original games, so I am not really going after anything on the Virtual Console - they overcharge for their stuff, too.
I could do a whole radio show based on the NES. Hahaha! Lots of great games.
