Any of you guys gonna pick this one up? It's been getting awesome reviews, some even dropping the phrase "game of the year." I played it for a few minutes at gamestop, and from the little I played of it, it was a lot of fun.

Typical review for a 1st party Nintendo franchise game. Zelda? Mario? Metroid? Must be the best game ever made.
(Also - Nothing will dethrone Halo 3 for game of the year.)
I hate Mario 64 because it basically started the non-Mario Mario Bros. games. I have heard a lot about Galaxy as well, but I would prefer to play it one way or another before I buy it. The Wiimote and nun-chuck make for a new element to gameplay. It enhanced Zelda a little bit. It kept Metroid Prime 3 from feeling like Metroid Prime 2 - but still didn't make it "gotta play!" by any means.
The thing that is going to matter most about this Galaxy game is speed. How fast is it? If it is slow like Mario 64, I don't want anything to do with it.

While I see your point, couldn't it also be said that N has made some of the best games ever, many for those three franchises'? While I believe you're correct, don't you think that the system-seller for the best-selling system might have a chance to topple halo 3? It may not do it, but it may come close. Personally, I never really go into the halo series; I found the first two to be ok, but nothing special. I never felt the need to play the third. To be fair, though, I never played the single-player, only multi-player. What do you mean by non-Mario Mario games? I wasn't a big fan of Mario 64 myself, and like I said, I only played smg for about 5 minutes, but it did seem faster than mario 64, and I love the controls.

While I see your point, couldn't it also be said that N has made some of the best games ever, many for those three franchises'? They've made one "best game ever" and it was Super Mario Bros. Like many, I think SMB3 is the best in the series. That said, SMB was a cultural phenomenon. Zelda gained a good niche of fans. Metroid has its own cult following. But do not mistake the age of an ongoing franchise for greatness. No. Not a snowball's chance, honestly. The fact that the Wii is the best selling system is irrelevant. Most of the people that bought a Wii are non-gamers. These types are going to buy (if they buy any other games at all) stuff like Mario Party or Wii Play. They aren't going to run out and buy Mario Galaxy. The game will still sell well, I'm sure - but it can't touch Halo 3. I don't really understand the huge appeal of the Halo series, myself. For me, I am just witnessing pop culture soaking in what I did over 15 years ago - the Wolfenstein/DOOM phenomenon. I also think that once you have played an FPS here or there, you've played them all. I don't consider Mario 64, Sunshine or any of this other recent stuff to be "mario games" (save NSMB). Mario is a side scroller. Period. Paragraph. Epitaph. If I am having to "adventure" inside a Mario game, something is terribly wrong. Enter the N64, its sucky controller, and Mario 64...and you have the huge fall of Nintendo. Definitely good that it is faster. It also helps if it has a lot of coins and a time limit. Still - It seems fully 3D. I'm just going to have to play it. I've seen a few videos, screenshots, etc...but I am not expecting much because it is just another 3D free-roaming entry in the Mario franchise.

I am planning on getting it today. TRU has a promotion, buy it tpday and get a $25.00 gift card, so that makes it almost half price at that point. Certainly it will be worth $25.00. I loved Super Paper Mario....very cool game, so I expect this will be another interesting and fun to play game!
