It seems a lot of people love one and hate the other. To me, it's not a huge deal, but I've heard that in fullscreen the edges of the screen are cut off. Which do you prefer?

Widescreen whenever possible.
If you want to know what full-screen does, watch Star Wars (Ep 4), and go to the scene where Luke is spying on the Banthas just after catching R2. He says "There's on, I can see him now," referring to a sand-person. In the full-screen version, you the viewer don't see him - he is only visible in the original widescreen format.

Whatever the director's intended aspect ratio is.
Fullscreen is commonly referred to as "cutting off picture" & this is only partially true. Many times the fullscreen version actually "shows more picture" than the widescreen version would.
Star Wars is indeed an example of a film where you lose a lot in the Pan and Scan (fullscreen) version. That movie was framed at an aspect ratio of 2.35:1, so you naturally lose a lot when you have to crop it to 4:3. (Almost half!)
I expect this "debate" (if it could even legitly be called that) to die off as HDTV becomes the norm.

I used to think full screen, but now am onto widescreen...we are getting a 52" HDTV this fall, so I started buying Widescreen this year...not perfect on a regular TV, but I am preparing for the future... My Dad likes full screen hates the widescreen...he said he feels like he is missing something....lol

You really don't notice the blackout bars after a while, and you get so much more out of the movie when you see it as it was actually aired. ![](http://img8.photobucket.com/albums/v28/gunman_sr5/bouncers.gif) Although, on a small television I can understand wanting full-screen. It can be very difficult to make out the details of a widescreen image on a screen that is small to start with..... ![](http://img44.photobucket.com/albums/v136/TTC_Forum/comp.gif)
