Anyone watch all 3 hours last night? I was accually pleasently surprised by the amount of classic films there were. I thought it would some big Julia/Brad/Tom/Hollywood elite fest. For you star wars fans "May the Force be with you" came in at #7. Hakunamatata from the Lion King even made it.

Caught the final 8. I was expecting the #1 result to be "Frankly, my dear ....".
My only problem with it, out of 4000 nominations, only 1 phrase from The Princess Bride was in the list ("Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya ..." - did it make the final?). Setting aside the fact that the entire movie is one long fun quote, I can easily come up with a dozen classic lines ....

Yeah, but the Princess Bride really isn't that popular a film outside of its own cult. If you go with lines from that movie, you have to include Army of Darkness (among many others). More people are going to recognize films like Star Wars, Terminator, Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, Godfather. - more of the common ones.

I need to agree with CK on this one. I have not seen The Princess Bride all the way through, but I sure don't here anyone quoting it that I know of. On the smae note I have never seen Casablanca or Gone with the Wind, but when someone quotes a line from either of those I know right where it came from.

How could you stop in the middle? And if you want to test who has seen the movie, just walk around saying "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya" and wait for them to finish the line .... They just may not mention it because they also think no one else has seen it. Yes, the Princess Bride is a bit of an underground hit, but thats more from lack of publicity (if no one had directed you to it, would you have otherwise watched it?) than a reflection of the quality of the film.

Well with that in mind, ask yourself - Why would people consider it to be a big quotable movie that should be listed in the top 100 movie quotes if most people haven't seen it?
Nobody is going to quote an "underground hit" - it has to be mainstream. I would restate my whole point of quoting Army of Darkness.
