Why is it all anime box sets have to be so expensive. Kyla and I have gotten into Inuyasha lately. Now that I am on third shift I can't watch it any more. So I looked into the box sets. Right $90 a season. There are 8 box sets. I don't think so. I have found a couple places that sells the entire series plus all 4 movies for around $100. Thats fair. $90 for 1 season though. Whats with that. I noticed the same for Full Metal Alchemist and Ghost In The Shell. Anyways that was my rant...

Welcome to the club. That's been a rant since they began actually released collected sets instead of only the individual volumes.
Short answer: relatively low demand (compared to everything else) with strict supply control.

At least you have the option. Anime was an impossible item to find when I first bought a DVD player in 1998. Plus - even though the stuff gets dubbed & released domestically, it is still like importing your product.

This is still better than buying anime in the early and mid-90s, when anime was much more of a niche thing. I remember having to pay $20 for a Ranma 1/2 VHS tape back then, and only getting 2 episodes on it! At least these days you get around 4 episodes for your $20, and on DVD to boot.
Also rampant bootlegging of anime is another cause of the high prices. But the high prices are what is causing people to buy bootlegs. It's a viscious cycle.

I ....admit to dubbing VHS tapes in the 90s.
Sorry. I am adding to your pain, Jeremy.

I ....admit to dubbing VHS tapes in the 90s. I did too occasionally. But I still bought my fair share of official tapes as well, especially if it was an anime that I turned out to really love. The problem with some fans is that ALL they do is pirate the stuff or buy the bootlegs, and the actual makers never see a dime. It's all about balance.

Ditto on the dubbing, though most of that was fansubs before they were licensed and published domestically. Much of which I have at least started to replace with DVD, and the rest I plan to eventually.
I remember renting Ranma and Evangelion on those 2-ep VHS tapes. Then they finally decided to do DVDs, and those even started off with 2 eps per volume because they were doing dual VHS and DVD releases.
Of course, the most annoying bit was that Viz (Ranma 1/2, Maison Ikkoku) would release the DUB first, then release the SUB two or three months later .... as if the subtitles required more production work .....
