BOOYA!
Looks like the new He-Man series is due for release on DVD in February 2008.
AND it will be packed with extras.
AND it will be in HIGH DEFINITION on blu-ray.
I'm....excited.

Rounding out our stream of BCI-related stories today comes confirmed word about the Navarre-owned company releasing the 2002 "MYP" (Mike Young Productions) incarnation of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe on DVD this coming February. As you recall, we had word this past July that BCI was holding a special announcement at San Diego Comic Con that they had acquired these rights from Mattel, and now come first firm word about when the first of these sets will be in stores.
There will be 3 sets, each with 13 episodes. Each episode will have the end-of-episode "morals" attached; these were never aired in the US so that in itself will be a cool "extra" for fans in the States who only saw the syndicated broadcasts. What's more, BCI plans to LOAD these packages up with special features; their self-imposed goal is to outdo what they've done before! Will Mattel help? Certainly; the new California offices of BCI are right down the street from Mattel's, and we're told that "they've been amazing to work with and have absolutely tons of great stuff." Sounds like a big win for the fans, and another awesome group of collectible sets for animation lovers!
The episodes were aired in full screen in the USA, but they were originally produced for widescreen and so BCI is going to put these on DVD in anamorphic widescreen presentation for maximum enjoyment. What's more, while it isn't set in stone, it is VERY likely (better than 90% chance) that BCI will release these on high-definition Blu-ray Disc as well. Testing of the episodes on that format showed much better-quality visuals with extra depth to the scenes, more dynamic colors and greater background details. HD DVD versions are also under discussion. BCI has dabbled in plans for hi-def releases with some films, and if they think that a hi-def release can actually improve an animated show like the 2002 He-Man, then they will go for it!
BCI understands how anxious fans are to see cover art for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (2002) - Volume 1, but it is too far away from being finalized and they are not ready to share it just yet. We are still a ways away from the street date, as they put it, so stay tuned and we'll bring that to you just as soon as they finish it (and as soon as they've finalized an exact date and their pricing, too!). Thanks to the guys at BCI for all the info they helped us pass on to animation fans today!
