Ugh.... A prequil to TOS. Can't even use the original actors due to age. Definit bombage.

Honestly, I liked the idea for "Star Trek: The Beginning" a lot more. trekweb.com/stories.php?aid=443d48256c198It seems a little silly to me to do a young Kirk and Spock at the Academy. However, I think the fact that Rick Berman has gotten the boot could be a good thing for the show.

Didn't hear about Berman. He was ok - its Braga who is the problem. The man who never let continuity get in the way of a "good" story ....

I look forward to this one. I want to see something new. TNG ...for all of the character development put forth during the series, never managed to really created an incredible movie-like story for the big screen.
Not that I am complaining about the TNG movies, but they could have been better. More lines for Dr. Crusher, more interaction between the other stars of TNG, etc...
The only decent confrontational scene happened in First Contact when Lily is trying to convince Picard to blow up the Enterprise while both of them are in the ready room. If movies like Spiderman and X-Men (comic movies, of course) can move into a fun but serious era in regards to interaction of characters, surely Star Trek could as well.

I will give this a chance. I think that it is time for some new blood and a fresh idea.

I just don't want to go "back" to Kirk and Spock. Going back to the TOS era, not a problem - just give us some brand new characters, instead of trying to find younger versions of the original actors. Personally, I want some more in the TNG era, but again with a new batch of characters. Either that, or start making movies out of Peter David's ST: New Frontiers novels.

I don't think a Star Trek movie without characters originally developed in a Star Trek TV series would fly. They couldn't do Bob and Joe at Starfleet Academy - it would have to be Kirk and Spock (or a later generation)

I think they could do a great job with new characters. The universe is already established (and reestablished, and re-established ...), so its just a matter of picking a good time period to use and developing the characters. They need to get over the whole "attract a brand new audience" idea and plan on utilizing the fan base they already have.

I liked Jo's idea of doing a movie, or a series/mini-series even, based on the New Frontiers novels books.
