Last time I realy heard any news about this. TRU was closeing at the end of the holiday season. I noticed lately other companies have been doing several exclusives for TRU. Did that save the toy division from all being converted to Babies R Us, or is the closeing still happening?

I had not heard that they were closing, but I heard they were thinking about selling or spinning it off. My understanding from the trades is that they are going to continue to operate until they find a buyer. I hope they don't close. I like them for some things. They just seem to lack in getting really good merchandise first....

A lot of the toy manufacturers are planning to offer more exclusives to TRU to combat Walmart's dominance. The G1 reissues are a familiar example here, and with 3 little girls we've been keeping an eye on My Little Pony (another Hasbro line) news.

What Hurts TRU is the fact that they still believe that they are the only toy store left standing. Their Prices are over inflated and The G1 Reissues are dying because of this. As for Store exclusives I really hate this as it seems unfair for thsoe who don't have some of the stores that get these exclusive stores or can't afford to pay $50 for a sam's Membership.

Where TRU and the other toy stores are suffering is that the expansion of the Super Walmart and Super Target stores has created a one-stop shopping center experience - groceries, clothes, electronics (games and movies), and toys all in one spot. The Super Walmarts even add on auto service, so you can get your errands done while having the oil changed or tires rotated!
TRU and the rest may need to look at combining with other national chains to create similar super-stores to truly get back into the game.
Of course, lower prices and better and faster distribution would help too!

Yeah..not just competitive seasonally...although I have noticed that Target went back up to $5.99 for TMNT's at some sotres. THey are $4.44 at others....Wal-Mart is at $4.88 here. TRU is not competitive all year round...which is their main problem...

The biggest problem that I have with TRU is that they never hava anything. Being that all they do is toys, they should always have the new toys in stock. Even if they were a buck or 2 higher that Wal Mart, if I new that as soon as a new toy was released that TRU has it, then I would shop there. As it is Wal Mart often has them first and that is not good for a Toys only store.

Update from the WSJ "Toys "R" Us received an offer from an investment group to buy the company outright as an alternative to the firm's plans to shed its toy-retailing business. The group's opening offer was $23.25 a share, or about $5 billion." Here is the link. I am a subscriber, so I don't know if you have to be or not to view it. I may be able to get around it. online.wsj.com/article_print/0,,SB111042020615775446,00.html
