That's pretty sad too. Terminator 2 is like 5x the movie that Transformers is.
But then ....dollars mean nothing due to number of theaters, population, inflation, etc...when it comes to comparing it to films released in the past.

But when it came out, I was still in High school (I am 33 now) and I think I only paid $5.00 or less to see it. Popcorn and a soda was cheaper too.

I wish they would go by total number of tickets sold instead of the $$$ a film makes. Due to the same reasons stated by CK and Devy2K. Movie tickets were way cheaper back then. So going my $$$ is very inacurate. Life in general was cheaper back then to.

Plus TF has the advantage of being in twice as many theaters, when you look at the stats further to the left. Adjusting just for that (not even considering inflation and price changes), TF is roughly on par with T2.

I haven't seen t2 in quite some time, but I think I prefer tf..at least after only one viewing (of tf that is..I've seen t2..twice ).

Wait for the hype to die down, then consider the two. I agree 100%. I think people are singing the praises for TFs so high right now because it's brand new. Let's see how everyone feels in another year after the newness wears off. T2 is a total classic and is waaaay better than TFs, imo. Same goes for the new TFs movie compared to the original animated 1986 movie. People are saying how the new movie blows it out of the water, but they just don't seem to grasp the notion that the original movie is over 20 years old now and we've all seen it a half a billion times. Of course it seems rather old hat now in comparison. But I'm betting the new movie won't have nearly the staying power as the original had/has. Not talking about box office of course, I mean as far as rewatchability goes.

Well, I never thought t2 was that great in the first place (it's a nice action flick, but if I sat down and made a list of my fav. movies, it'd be closer to #40 or so then #1)..I still think tf's is better.
I really hope the new movie has lasting power; it's what will propel the franchise for the foreseeable future, I would think; it may become for new fans what the original film was to many of us, and I think the box office numbers really show that (not that all blockbuster films have staying power, of course, just hope, and at this point, still speculation on my part). All the good hype and love for the film is of course a good sign.
It's been a week since I saw it, so I think some of "the hype" may still be there, but I believe I can say w/ confidence that it's better than the original..I mean, after ss' death, the original goes downhill very quickly; there have been times I've thought, "I'm gonna watch tftm!", I pop it in, love the beginning, love the fight at autobot city, love the prime/megs fight, etc., but after the original cast is cast aside..the new characters just don't do it for me, for the most part. I just hate the whole "we killed off old toys..I mean robots..so we can sell you these new ones!" I mean, the new movie is called a big gmc commercial, but it's no worse than the original in terms of blatant commercialism. The new film is far from perfect, but I feel more for some of the characters ('bee, frenzy, plus prime not being in the first film for long really hurt it imo, although his death had its emotional appeal), the comedy is better, the action is better, and neither had that great of a story.
In a way, I think it's hard to compare the two bc the original had two seasons of a cartoon that built up the characters in our minds and showed what they were all about; the new film doesn't have that luxury, as it's a self-contained entity. So, while I can easily see why g1 prime's death might mean more to people than jazz's, g1 prime had much more time for character-building and establishment in our minds as a hero and all-around good guy. Jazz, while under-utilized (a fault of the film), even if he was used more could never have had the same appeal, for no other reason than lack of available time.

Time will only tell where this movie sits in the ranks of sci-fi and/or action movies. It has a LONG way to go before it even approaches that of Terminator 2, Aliens, or Die Hard.
A week is not enough time for the hype to die down. More movies need to come out, the summer needs to end, and we need a posting decline in the Transformers forum before the hype dies down. We just completed the first weekend. So long as it is in the theater, the hype will continue.
