This is a review/comparison of Transformers: Identification and Price Guide vs The Unofficial Guide to Transformers 1980's through 1990s.
When I first heard of and bought J.E. Alvarez Guide to Transformers, it was the best thing that I have ever looked at. I took it everywhere with me. And to this day I still really like. I have to hand it to J.E. for putting it together and showing is passion for this hobby.
But I have now found a better one. Transformers: Identification and Price Guide by Mark Belloma. It basically does the same thing, shows you every US release G1 Transformer and gives you a basic price guide. The thing I like better about it is how it is laid out. Below I will show list what I like best about each book and the tell you why I like Marks book better. I am not going to talk negative about any book as they are both good.
J.E. Alvarez Guide to Transformers (Likes)
1. First book (that I have seen) to display my hobby.
2. Had a nice and maybe a little cheesy bit of humor.
3. Had other Transformer content: G2 Beast Wars Party plates.
4. Author has a real love and passion for Transformers.
Mark Belloma Transformers: Identification and Price Guide (Likes)
1. Only showed G1 Transformers.
2. Gave a brief history of where Transformers came from.
3. Better Pictures.
4. Character information (Tech Spec)as well as facts about the toys.
I like and use both books, but the reason that I like Marks book better is that it deals with just G1, gives a lot more information about the toys themselves and has a very clean and organized lay out. Below I will post a pick of the books that I have. J.E. does have the better cover I think, a big picture of Fortress Maximus!! If you can afford it, I would get both, but if not I think that Marks book is the way to go.
Note: J.E. does have a newer version than the one that I have and a guide to Japanese Transformers.
