I've already been upset at much of what has come out of this TF Movie. But this one put me over the edge. I did a print screen to show you what I'm P.O.ed about. There is a Q & A type of thread on the official TF Movie site in there forum. Folks post questions to the writers of the movie and they will answer every so often. One of them is this Roberto Orci dude. Up until now I thought he was pretty fair. But his answer on why they went with this Hugo Weaving instead of Frank Welker for Megatron has me steamed. First check out the answer in the image. I highlighted his answer for you. If you can't see it too well here is a copy and paste of the Q & A: Quote: Originally Posted by Spanbauer Hi Roberto,

Hugo Weaving joins a long list of distinguished talent who have voiced the Transformers over the years. We know many fans will be disappointed to learn that Welker will not reprise his excellent role. Ultimately, we all felt it would have been pandering to use Welker's voice when so much of the character of Megatron has been changed. Prime remained basically as he was in the original incarnation, therefore, Cullen made sense -- Megatron, however, evolved siginificantly, and it would've been a transparent ploy to placate fans.
As far as Hugo Weaving is concerned, it seems to us that hardly any explanation is required. We're lucky to have him and his distinct voice. Again, he joins a long line of distinct voices. Also here is the link to see the actual post. You will have to scroll down toward the bottom of the page. boards.transformersmovie.com/showthread.php?t=4045&page=68 So here is my take on it. It is basically saying we did not want to go with Welker because we did not want it to seem like we were either appeasing or giving into the fans. So here is the middle finger to you s.o.b's now this is our movie and we will do what we want to with it. We gave you Cullen now shut up and be happy. Because you morons will buy anything while we rake in the cash. You know it's like us fans built this franchise and now the Hollywood types are coming and cashing in on it. That's what they do with most everything. I've never seen such a smug attitude towards fans of a franchise as this bunch has been. I mean how could anyone else be more credible for Megatron than Welker. He gave birth to the character for heaven's sake. I'll still go see it. Probably by the DVD and maybe a toy or two. But this bunch putting it on just aint worth a crap in my book. I'm actualy more mad at this attitude toward the fandom than them not selecting Welker. I always had the feeling they would not give the second biggest part to him since the number 1 went to Cullen. They would just not throw us another bone. I'm sorry but I guess it's the passionate fan in me coming out. But I have finally come to realize that the TFs I love, cherish, and grew up with have come and gone. And that G1 TFs at it's purest has died. Now it will always be remembering the greatness it was since the book on it is finished. But if I'm wrong about this whole movie deal I'll be the first to admit it. It ain't looking good to me right now. I do now wish they would leave it alone and kill the franchise.

Great, you don't post for weeks and now you come back peaved. What happened to the 40fan we all remember ;D On topic, that is a big fat slap in the face. A nice, "Hugo's voice fits the look." would have been sufficient. All the movie people seem to have had their little at the fans

I kinda feel like used toilet paper when it comes to news/facts related to this movie.
I just wish it would get its release so we could go see it and get it behind us.
Heck - it might still end up being really good - you never know until you see it. But still - it seems like most everything that could be bad appears to be bad.
Could be worse. They could have cast Peter Cullen as Bumblebee or some other bot that might have one line.
.....they could have cast him as Megatron....whoooooaaaa.

Honestly, the response (while probably not worded in the most politic way) makes me feel better about the choice. The militant G1 fans are up in arms enough as it is - how much worse can it become if Welker was chosen but the characterization of Megatron was changed? "Megatron would NEVER say/do THAT!"
By providing a new voice to go with the new characterization, that demonstrates to me that they are at least attempting to make this a real project and not just another Hasbro money grab.

I've heard that a lot lately... that Welker's G1 Megatron voice wouldn't be a good match for the new revisioning of Megatron they made for the movie. But there's this little thing called VERSITILITY! Just because the G1 Meg voice wouldn't work as-is, doesn't mean Welker couldn't have changed the inflection to closer match what the director wanted, or given them a new voice altogether. He's a top notch voice actor afterall. It just seems like a shame that we couldn't get both Cullen AND Welker together again as opposing leaders. Honestly I don't think Weaving is a bad choice, but I have to shake my head when I hear so many fans saying how "genius" the choice is, or that this is the greatest casting in the history of mankind. I get the feeling that no matter who was chosen, certain fans would've said the exact same thing. I'm with CK... I kind of just want this movie to come and go already. All this infighting among the fandom has left a seriously bad taste in my mouth. I feel almost persecuted for being a G1 fan these days.

G1ers up in arms. Who fit's that description here? ;D For real the sad fact is that pure genuine G1 is dead and gone. There is really nothing for us to look forward to any more. Just now looking back on the good old day. I could have excepted more the typical way of saying Weaving was just right for the part and we felt it was the best decision. But saying it was not to pander to the fans is a slap in the face to the ones who made this franchise. Which is now paying them big $$$. They say that Megatron character has done all this changing through the years. So has Primes. From what little I saw of Armada and Energon. He was more Pacifist Prime. The various TF characters have been done over so many times throughout the various series that it's so watered down to become meaningless. That's why all my TF Univers is G1. Because those were the true identies and characteristics of the characters. Since then it's all been a bunch of filler for toy asile shelves and junky cartoons.

"we all felt it would have been pandering"
That is what ticks me off, not the fact that are not use him as the voice. All they had to say is that with the character changes, we feel that Weaving fit more with the character, and left it at that.
I am one step away from not ever watching this movie. There are lots of good movies that I can watch, I dont have to see this one. i am still taking a wait and see attitude, but I am not happy with how they treat the fans.

I understand Welker is going to voice somebody. With the limited action time Megs is suposidly going to get. We may have recieved a better deal with him not being Megatron. With all that Frenzy is going to be in the movie and Frank was G1 Frenzy!

It's a sad thing to say being a big Transfan. But I'm starting to think I'm looking more forward to Spiderman 3 than the TF Movie. At least the Spidey movies have been done right. I'm sure Stan Lee made sure of that.

I'm sure Stan Lee made sure of that. Quoted For Truth! I'm much much more looking forward to Spidey 3 over the TFs movie. The Spiderman movies also had many changes compared to the original source material, but the difference between it and TFs is that the changes were mostly logical and the altered designs were a natural contrast and still looked GOOD, imo. I shudder to imagine what Bay's team would've done to the Spidey property.

I think the most recent shortpacked is quite interesting..
I'm not saying anyone here is at that level of absurdity/insanity, but this thread isn't exactly on the level..Welker simply wasn’t right for what they were looking for. Heck, the fact that they gave the guy an audition and are still using him in the movie should speak volumes about what they’re trying to do for g1 fans. The “pandering” comment was rude and unnecessary, I’ll admit, but if you were taking the flak that murphy has for the last few months, you'd be ready to give it back as well (not that two wrongs make a right, of course).
And as for “versatility”, if he didn’t sound exactly like g1 megatron, g1ers would be up in arms about that as well, so, either way, the movie guys lose, so why should they even try. Beats me.
And they’re right, megatron has evolved; he’s not merely an 80’s cartoon plot device; in more recent years he’s had schemes that’ve actually worked (bw winner!) and he no longer sounds like..well, a cheesy 80’s villain. For most of us, the 80’s ended about 17 years ago; feel free to join us in the 21st Century at any time…
We get hugo weaving, a great actor w/ amazing voice talent, and you guys can’t handle that. I don’t know why it even matters to you guys; I mean, why have welker’s g1 godhood trudged through the mud in this debacle of a blasphemous tf flick? You’d think that if he had any pride he would’ve look at the designs and said “that’s not the gee-wun, I will not besmirch my good name w/ this garbage!” and be done w/ it.
Yeesh, and some of you guys wonder why I don't come around much anymore..I'll be glad when this is over and we see an (hopefully) awesome Heroes toyline and toon.

Truth be told, there has never really been a "good" Transformers series made. So many other cartoons illustrate this.
I am not interested in Bay's take on Transformers. I think it is just another spit into the pot of "suckyness."
I don't understand why our opinions bother you, Destro. I can see how you can strongly disagree - like we always have - but "feel free to join us in the 21st century?" Gimme a break. How about this one - feel free to respect my opinion and let me rant on and on and on about how much I dislike the decisions they have made for this film.
I used to keep saying that I am open them making their own creative decisions and adaptations from the original, but they have done a horrible job. If they wanted to make something entirely different, then they should have never listened to the fans. DUH! Don't open a message board for people to post on, give opinions, etc. Don't look for fan feedback - be discrete about how you approach the community and talk in a positive way. The leaders of the project feel that they are throwing bones to the fans by casting Cullen. Why did they bother to do this? There are too many lines getting crossed between G1 salute & "that won't work."
I'll never fall behind the "just happy to have a movie" category of people - which is pretty much what the people are that back up Bay in my opinion.
I don't understand the anti "gee-won" attitude that people have. It's like they just want to bring a bad attitude to the table for those that want to see it the way it should be done. What's your problem, Destro? Why do you and all the other people out there want to start wars about people's opinions? Can you answer that?

It's like they just want to bring a bad attitude to the table for those that want to see it the way it should be done. The way it should be done is as much a subjective argument as almost every other part of this debate. Yes G1 is the original (and still best overall), but there have been many more recent incarnations the gave a different spin and twist on sentient transforming robots. Ask the community as a whole which is the "right" example, and you will receive at least one vote for each animated series, comic line, and toy line that was ever made. Am I disappointed that the movie is not pure G1? Yes. But at least Bay stated that from the beginning, and didn't suddenly show up with something different than promised. Looking back, there never could have been a pure G1 movie (live action or animated) today. G1 was a solid product of the 80's, cheesy, predictable, and "safe" (with the restrictions on characters getting shot, etc). It was also designed as a toy commercial. To make a financially successful story out of it today, some things would have had to change to give it a wider appeal than the nostalgic fanbase. I have been critical of the development of the movie myself, but I am also willing to give it a chance. This is yet another new interpretation, and if I don't like it then I will throw it in the bin with RID, Armada, Energon, and Cybertron. Yet I refuse to go in with a bad attitude about it, because that will prevent me from finding any enjoyment whatsoever and so predestine my opinion.

I think the new Shortpacked is really really preachy actually. Pass. Hey, I'm right here in the 21st century with you. I have a job, a toy collection that's better than yours, a girlfriend, a DeLorean, and a house that's paid for. I don't like your insinuation, Destro, that us G1 fans are stuck in the past, and therefore are somehow unable to function in the real world. I function just fine, thanks. And what you're describing about G1 is its FORMULA if you've heard of such a thing. Bad guys come up with plan 5786b on how to conquer the planet and/or universe, the good guys spring into action and prevent dastardly plan from coming to fruition, and the bad guys goes running home to mommy in the end. It's called... a cartoon. It was for entertainment value. I think the old G1 show was awesome. The plots were simplistic, but it was the character's PERSONALITIES that made it a real stand-out. I'm also a Beast Wars fan, that show was also great. But everything else since has been total crap, imo. Uh... you DO know that there's something called compromise, right? Welker's movie Megatron could've been reminiscent of G1 Megs, but still have a more serious edge to it. I think you're unnecessarily being a bully, Destro. Be more tolerant of other people's opinions and not be so quick to jump on them for it just because they differ from yours. If you're happy with the direction of the new movie, fine, more power to you. But don't cast aspersions on me for not thinking it's all that.
