From the front page of 2005.
Multiple studio sources have confirmed to the IESB that Frank Welker is days away from signing on the dotted line to voice our beloved robotic villain of the 80’s, Megatron, in the upcoming Michael Bay film Transformers.
We know that since day one it has been the desire of Producers Don Murphy and Tom DeSanto to bring Peter Cullen and Frank Welker both back to the franchise that they helped build.
One of our sources tells the IESB that Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg never expected the legions of Transformers fans to rally behind both Frank and Peter the way they have, fans have been vocal and their message went all the way to the top. We should expect an official announcement very soon.

I saw that Frank had been solidified for the film in the imdb, but I was still scratching my chin a little bit.
Amazing.

It would be nice for Cullen and Welker to have the parts since it seems to mean a lot to them (or at least to Cullen). But this movie is already so far removed from G1, I'm wondering why the makers would even bother casting them? I mean G1 is "so over" and "completely outdated", right?

Good point. Using the original voice actors is somewhat of a step in the opposite direction of where these guys are trying to take things. It seems to me that it would have made more sense for them to cast other actors for the voices due to how different they are making things from G1. It may be that they figure selecting Cullen and Welker is the one "bone" they are going to throw the big fans.
Still - I definitely wanted those two from the start, regardless.
